Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir comes a brilliant, unforgettable, and heart-wrenching contemporary YA novel about family and forgiveness, love and loss, in a sweeping story that crosses generations and continents。

Lahore, Pakistan。 Then。
Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match。 After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Cloud’s Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start。

Juniper, California。 Now。
Salahudin and Noor are more than best friends; they are family。 Growing up as outcasts in the small desert town of Juniper, California, they understand each other the way no one else does。 Until The Fight, which destroys their bond with the swift fury of a star exploding。

Now, Sal scrambles to run the family motel as his mother Misbah’s health fails and his grieving father loses himself to alcoholism。 Noor, meanwhile, walks a harrowing tightrope: working at her wrathful uncle’s liquor store while hiding the fact that she’s applying to college so she can escape him—and Juniper—forever。

When Sal’s attempts to save the motel spiral out of control, he and Noor must ask themselves what friendship is worth—and what it takes to defeat the monsters in their pasts and the ones in their midst。

From one of today’s most cherished and bestselling young adult authors comes a breathtaking novel of young love, old regrets, and forgiveness—one that’s both tragic and poignant in its tender ferocity。

This is one of the most devastating books I've ever read, and honestly there were times the story filled me with so much despair I considered not finishing this book - but I COULDN'T because this book is so beautifully written and the characters are SO WONDERFUL。 I'm honestly kind of surprised this is being sold as YA and not adult literary fiction, not because of the quality (YA books can be just as well written as adult books!), but because of the scope - this story is about the relationship b This is one of the most devastating books I've ever read, and honestly there were times the story filled me with so much despair I considered not finishing this book - but I COULDN'T because this book is so beautifully written and the characters are SO WONDERFUL。 I'm honestly kind of surprised this is being sold as YA and not adult literary fiction, not because of the quality (YA books can be just as well written as adult books!), but because of the scope - this story is about the relationship between two teenagers, yes, but it's also about their parents (and focuses on one of their mothers in a very direct, intentional way) and about the many, many difficulties of being immigrants of color in the USA。 It also spans a huge amount of time and seems to cover so much that it's hard to believe it's just one book。 I don't think I'll be able to bear rereading this painfully heartfelt book, but it will definitely stick with me and it's one of the best books I've read this year。 I will definitely need to pick up more of Tahir's works。 。。。more

This has been one of my favorite books this year so far。 It’s a story of struggle and triumph。 I love the realness of it。 People really go through things like this and they can survive。 It discusses so many issues like religion, abuse, and racism。 I highly recommend this one!

If I could give this book more stars I would。 This is a book that sticks with you。 It’s not an easy book to read。 The topics are hard and uncomfortable but I couldn’t put it down。 I became completely lost in this story and these characters and I’m a better person for having read that book。 I want to recommend this book to everyone but the it does address several trigger topics so I would make sure and warn anyone you recommend it to。 The author has a trigger warning at the beginning of the book If I could give this book more stars I would。 This is a book that sticks with you。 It’s not an easy book to read。 The topics are hard and uncomfortable but I couldn’t put it down。 I became completely lost in this story and these characters and I’m a better person for having read that book。 I want to recommend this book to everyone but the it does address several trigger topics so I would make sure and warn anyone you recommend it to。 The author has a trigger warning at the beginning of the book as well。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This is my first time reading a book by Sabaa Tahir and I love it。 This book is so beautifully written。 I love all the main characters。 The friendship between Salahudin and Noor is something I wish I would have。 Salahudin made mistake by dealing drugs but until the end, he still protected Noor。 I cried ugly tears when he confessed to the judge about his crime just to save Noor and her future。 And the ending。。。 I'm so happy for the two of them。 I'm glad I chose to read this book。 This is my first time reading a book by Sabaa Tahir and I love it。 This book is so beautifully written。 I love all the main characters。 The friendship between Salahudin and Noor is something I wish I would have。 Salahudin made mistake by dealing drugs but until the end, he still protected Noor。 I cried ugly tears when he confessed to the judge about his crime just to save Noor and her future。 And the ending。。。 I'm so happy for the two of them。 I'm glad I chose to read this book。 。。。more

This book deserves to be a new generations’ Perks of Being a Wallflower。 It is heartbreaking。 It is so important。 Heed the trigger warnings and be prepared for heaviness, but it is well worth the read。 I loved it。

Beautiful underdog story told in alternating voices。 Thoroughly enjoyed, although I wish I had greater familiarity with the music referenced throughout。 Highly recommend。

4。5 rounded up to 5。 This was an excellent read that really made me think differently about people who are convicted of crimes, especially those who don’t come from a place of privilege。 Glad I picked this one up!

1am and i’m sobbing into my pillow。 this book tore my soul into pieces。 absolute masterpiece and i never knew how badly i needed pakistani rep in a book till now。

This was hard to read。 It pulls anger and conflicting emotions out of you in ways you expect a book like this to。 Though I have my fair share of reservations (hence why it’s not rated 5 stars), it was beautiful and complex and deserves a read by everyone

jzpeng

Some really devastating prose。 Would be a 5 star except for the little meta moment。 Consider as 4。5 stars。

Khushi

I don’t fully know how I feel but do know I loved it! This book broke my heart and I thanked it。 Salahudin is so dear to my heart and I am sorry he had to go through so much。Also love Noor, she was a true gem。 And finally Misbah no words to say how I feel but I love her。 Such a great book and so beautifully written。

This book is definitely a lot emotionally to handle so I would recommend reading up on content warnings。With that said, this story is so captivating and emotional! The writing is beautiful as well。 The characters are amazing and the way their stories connect and share a bigger message about the American dream and being an immigrant is truly memorable。 This is an amazing book!

Courtenay

Really beautiful。 I was in tears at the end。 Read this book。

It's all I can think of after rubbing out the tears from my eyes。 Y'all already know。The Urdu/Punjabi had me grinning from ear to ear。 I appreciated that Taahir touched on the representation of Muslims, acknowledgment, and respect for wherever people are in their faith。 She touched on abuse, death, racism, and drug abuse with uprightness and respect。 Taahir took a story and wrote it out in a captivating and emotional way, a way that made me think about it long after I finished it。 Her story speaks for those who experience life as an immigrant, a person of color, someone who has lost a loved one, someone who experienced abuse, and really, for all of us。 I'd recommend reading the TWs before continuing。 Also listening to some of Noor's bops as well。I loved this book so much, that I can't keep quiet about it。 Enjoy :) 。。。more

A lyrical story full of tragedy and hope。 Told through the alternating perspectives of two present day teens (Salahudin and Noor) living in California, and the past narrative of Salahudin's mother, following her from Pakistan to the United States。 Some very heavy topics are covered。 A lyrical story full of tragedy and hope。 Told through the alternating perspectives of two present day teens (Salahudin and Noor) living in California, and the past narrative of Salahudin's mother, following her from Pakistan to the United States。 Some very heavy topics are covered。 。。。more
